The Importance Of Being Ernie
is the theme song to Underground Ernie. It was written by the co-creator of the series Sid Rainey and Miles Hunt and Martin Bell of British band The Wonder Stuff, who also performed it under the name HRB Music, with Gary Lineker providing backing vocals as Ernie.

Lyrics

Underground Ernie, we know we’re gonna get there early!

Without a worry or a care!

“Really, I’m proud to be of service!”

Now mind the gap and don’t be nervous!

Victoria and Bakerloo,

Hammersmith and City too!

With Jubilee and Circle Line,

Your travel plans will all work out just fine!

Just ask Ernie,

Underground Ernie!

Just ask Ernie,

Underground Ernie!

The importance of,

The importance of…. being Ernie!

(instrumental 4 bars)

“Really, I’m proud to be of service!”

Now mind the gap and don’t be nervous!

Victoria and Bakerloo,

Hammersmith and City too!

With Jubilee and Circle Line,

Your travel plans will all work out just fine!

Just ask Ernie,

Underground Ernie!

Just ask Ernie,

Underground Ernie!

The importance of...

The importance of... being Ernie!

Notes

  • The name of the song is a reference to Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest.
  • At some of his solo shows, Miles Hunt performed an extract of this song.
  • An extended version of the song was released featuring Vic Reeves as Ernie instead of Gary Lineker.

Goofs

  • Ernie's feet slide around the cab when Ernie 1 leaves the station.
  • Jubilee's aerial is missing when he drives past Ernie.
